Wood Innovations Grant Applications Delayed
USDA Wood Innovations Grants: Funding Opportunities for WPMA Members
Grant Application Period Expected to Open Soon
The USDA Forest Service's Wood Innovations Grant (WIG) program is expected to open its next application period in November 2026, pending final federal budget approval. While the application process has been delayed, USDA officials do not anticipate a delay as lengthy as the previous cycle, when applications did not open until February 2026.
WPMA encourages members to explore these funding opportunities, which can help manufacturers expand production capabilities, invest in innovative technologies, improve efficiency, and develop new markets for wood products.
Funding Available for Wood Products Manufacturers
The USDA invested more than $80 million in 2026 to support innovative uses of wood in construction, energy production, manufacturing, and processing.
Since 2015, the Wood Innovations and Community Wood Grant programs have provided more than $240 million to over 500 recipients, supporting projects that strengthen wood products manufacturing and expand markets for forest products.
The maximum Wood Innovations Grant award is expected to remain at $300,000, subject to the final program announcement.
How Can WPMA Members Benefit?
Wood Innovations Grants may support projects involving:
-
Manufacturing Expansion: Adding production capacity, modernizing facilities, and incorporating innovative technologies.
-
Equipment Investments: Purchasing and installing eligible manufacturing and processing equipment.
-
Value-Added Wood Products: Developing new production lines and expanding markets for higher-value wood products.
-
Wood Waste Utilization: Creating productive uses for wood residues, including biomass energy applications.
-
Market Development: Overcoming barriers to the commercial use of wood and developing new opportunities for wood products.
-
Facility Development: Supporting eligible engineering, architectural design, feasibility studies, and permitting activities.
WPMA members considering facility improvements, equipment upgrades, or new product development should investigate whether their proposed projects qualify. Eligibility and allowable expenses will depend on the specific grant requirements.
Don't Miss These Funding Opportunities
With manufacturing costs continuing to rise, grant funding can provide valuable financial assistance for companies looking to invest in equipment, improve operations, and remain competitive.
WPMA encourages members to begin identifying potential projects now so they are prepared when applications open.
